How ad blockers and tracker blockers differ

Ads are visible. Trackers are often not. A good privacy setup starts by understanding which layer you are trying to control.

What does an ad blocker do?

An ad blocker prevents selected advertising resources or page elements from loading or displaying, using rules that identify known ad domains, request patterns, scripts, or page elements.

Blocking can happen in a browser extension, at the DNS/network layer, inside a VPN-related feature, or through a device-wide filtering application. The layer matters because it determines what traffic the blocker can see and control.

What does a tracker blocker do?

A tracker blocker targets technologies used to observe or link browsing behavior, such as third-party tracking requests, known analytics endpoints, or cross-site identifiers.

Ad blocking and tracker blocking overlap because many advertising systems also measure users. But removing a visible ad does not necessarily mean every tracker was blocked, and blocking trackers does not guarantee every ad disappears.

What blocking cannot guarantee

Security note: Ad and tracker blocking can reduce exposure, but it is not a substitute for software updates, safe browsing habits, multi-factor authentication, or endpoint security where appropriate.
